Legoland Windsor Review

Legoland will always bring a smile to children of all ages! Besides visiting the Tower of London, Harrods, the Markets and Museums (London Transport Museum for kids), Legoland Windsor is the No.1 Theme Park In London, and a MUST VISIT, if you have 5 days or more in London.

Opened in 1996, Legoland Windsor is the 2nd Legoland after Legoland Billund in Denmark. and it is a theme park dedicated to children aged 2-12 years old. With over 55 interactive rides, live shows, building workshops, driving schools and attractions, all set in 150 acres of beautiful parkland, LEGOLAND Windsor Resort is a unique family theme park. Young and old alike will be fascinated by the incredible LEGO models throughout the park.  From comical camels to fearsome fire-breathing dragons, world landmarks to musical pirates, it’s amazing what can be built with LEGO bricks – nearly 55 million of them!

Getting to Legoland Windsor

There is a train that goes to Windsor which is also located close to Heathrow Airport and there is a choice of local buses that ply between Heathrow and Windsor and Eton. (Note: You cannot use London transport passes like Oyster and Travelcard to Windsor. Though the London Pass has a special addition to its Travelcard that allows you to use the train to Windsor from London.)

We opted to take the Green Line Bus to Legoland Windsor, as the bus stop was just outside our Hotel. This would save us the valuable time of travelling to the train station. Check out the kids, all ready and awaiting Bus 702. shuttle legoland london

Admission Tickets

When you buy tickets on the actual day, you will be paying full price! Therefore, as much as possible, avoid doing this! Unless you have special passes.

Instead, Book in advance via the Legoland website as prices are cheaper – the further in advance you book the more you save. There are also seasonal discounts and monthly offers with savings of up to 30%

Keep your eye out for promotions in the summer in magazines – Kids Go Free and on drinks and cereal packs – Kellogg’s ‘Grown Ups go free’ with each paying child). These discounts are available only on gate prices, but you can still save money.

We went to the Supermarket to get those flaps off the boxes, but actually, we found the family passes which are available online much cheaper. So do check the various configurations when it comes to pricing, as the cheapest bargain, depends on the number of people in your party.

Our Experience with the Park

One of the first things that you see, when you enter the park is the funicular. The entrance is situated at the highest park of the park, and one can either walk down the slope or take a walk down the slopes, to the main attractions.

Legoland Malaysia is a far cry from Legoland Windsor. The latter is so much bigger, and the weather makes the park, so much more attractive. Check out some of the many rides in the pictures below:

One of the rides that my son liked was Atlantis. It’s basically a submarine ride where one will get to see fishes, as one explores the depths of the long lost city of Atlantis. Each submarine takes about 7-8 people, so its great for big groups, as the whole family can travel together in the sub.  As you exit the sub, there are also mini “feel and touch” exhibits, for the kids to get up-close to marine life.

My Girls loved the part of the park featuring Lego friends! With lots of Lego sets built on the ever popular Heartlake series, the mini city, had the girls in dream land, as they stared at their favorite creations! 🙂

The Pirate Show is a great way to take a break from the rides and the long queues. With explosions and a comical Pirate theme, the show will sit well with the whole family. Do arrive at least 15-20 minutes before show time, so as to get the family good seating arrangements.

Another alternative to the long queues at the rides, would be to take the kids to the many playgrounds located in the park. Here, the kids can have their traditional slides, in a fun setting, while parents can just relax, and take a well deserved break.

I personally loved the Lego Miniland. It was like walking through the whole of Europe in half an hour. The attention to detail is astonishing, and there are so much more models here, as compared to the daughter theme park in Malaysia.

Helpful Tips:

  • The Legoland Park opens at 10am, so get there early to avoid the queues.
  • As with all theme parks, eating at the Park is not cheap. We made sure that we packed Sandwiches from Marks & Spencer or on the cheap from Harrods.
  • Fast Pass Tickets:  The optional extra such as “Q-Bot” tickets enables one to jump the queues to rides. These cost £15 per person but may be worth it if you are considering going in peak season.
  • There is a Water Park Section, which we avoided, as it will prove to be a logistical nightmare, unless one is staying at the Legoland Hotel.
  • You don’t need more than a day, if you have been to Legoland Malaysia, as some of the rides are similar. However, we did skip a lot of the rides, that had long queues. Therefore, if you want to try everything, you will need to adjust your schedule.

Accomodation

Legoland has a hotel just next to the park for visitors who are not thinking of heading back to London for the night. The Legoland website has a great list of family friendly hotel recommendations close to the resort.

However as pricing is always important, your planning would be more effective if you visit price comparison websites like Agoda or Expedia. Another useful site for price comparison would be Traveloka. It has the ability to help users make hotel and flight bookings, while getting the best deals at the same time.
