Recently, we were invited to Sofitel So for a Couples Staycation, and we were more than ready to take a break from our busy schedule. Sofitel So began its operations in 2014, and being relatively young in Singapore, many locals have not heard about this latest addition to the hospitality industry

As we stood at the entrance of the Hotel, we could instantly recognize that the Building is special. Our research shows that the Sofitel So is housed in a grand heritage-listed building, which used to be the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company building. When Sofitel came in to refurbish the building, the hotel’s designer, Singapore-based Frenchwoman Isabelle Miaja, installed droll faux skylights, together with images of the cupolas of certain European buildings. They also enlisted Karl Lagerfeld, the famed French designer, to lend a hand in the hotel’s design. It is therefore not surprising, that the hotel carries a heavy European influence.

We love the attention paid to the details and the lobby looked really “chic” with all its exquisite trimmings. If you like what you see in the lobby, you would love the details, that you will find in our suite. Due to the vintage architecture, many of the guest rooms are blessed with unusually and pleasingly high ceilings Our capacious, 85-square-metre “So Lofty Suite”, comes with the high ceiling and is styled to reflect a Parisian apartment plonked in the middle of south-east Asia. The room also comes equipped with a large balcony, dominated by the huge columns of the heritage building’s facade. We love the sofas, paintings and decorations around the room! Everything just looked so pretty and luxurious!

The room constantly reminded us about Europe, and were pretty ornaments like the Eiffel Tower parked on our Study table. Everything in the room, from curtains to televisions to ordering food, is controlled with an iPad mini. All the room comes equipped with an iPhone, making it convenient for guests to make phone calls, anywhere within the hotel.

One of the most lavish features of our suite is a double-sized square Italian bathtub. We are quite used to Hotel Bathtubs, but not a double-sized one, where both both husband and wife can get in! Definitely a nice touch for honeymooners. There were also toiletries specially designed for “Him” and “Her” to use.

For food junkies like myself, the pantry comes with complimentary drinks and snacks. Therefore, there is no need to go to the local convenience store, as everything is within easy reach, and at no additional cost.

As all guests come with a device that needs charging, there is a user-friendly charging station, where one can charge all their appliances. From the iPad to a Android Phone, there is an outlet for all your devices in this technologically savvy room.

We enjoyed our nights sleep in our “arty” room, and when we went down for breakfast in the morning, we were treated to a meal that spoke to our early morning hunger prangs. We ordered our usual “Eggs Benedict”, and we were fed with our usual Western morning delights like Waffles and Pancakes. The Dining area is also filled with sofa and chairs, that cater to parties and comfort levels of different groups.

One of the perks of staying at Sofitel is the perk of staying right in the Central Business District. With free parking and the train station just 5 minutes away, the Hotel is a good base for one’s traveling endeavors. Together with the Satay Street of Lau Pa Sat, just outside the hotel lobby, there is plenty of food for one to savor, during your stay at the hotel.
