Direct from South Korea, this amazing theatrical spectacular is where Master Chef meets Stomp. Over 8 million people have been entertained around the world by five fabulous chefs who drum (with knives), juggle (with knives), and literally cook their way through a fast-paced evening of culinary delight, the likes of which you have never seen!

For 3 nights, the Resorts World Theatre will be  thrown into an explosive performance as aromatic smells of foods fills the stage and chefs race against time to pull together a wedding banquet. Will the chefs complete the wedding banquet in time?

Best of all, you don’t need to speak Korean to understand the show! NANTA (COOKIN’) is a comic musical non-verbal performance derived from the traditional Korean instrumental performance, “Samulnori”. It made its international debut in 1999 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it received an award for the best performance and it has since played to an International audience of 8 million people from all over the world.

We caught excerpts of the show on Youtube, and we were fascinated by the adrenaline and comic precision executed on the stage. We are also blessed to be able to conduct an email interview with the producer of NANTA (COOKIN’), Mr Seung-Whan Song.

Check out our interview with Seung-Whan Song (Producer of NANTA (COOKIN’) below:

1. How did the idea of the show come about?

I wanted to connect people from all over the world and let them have a peek into the Korean culture. As Korean was not easily understood by people outside of Korea, I decided to use rhythm, beats and tunes to tell the story instead and thus NANTA was born. I hope that people all over the world will continue to support NANTA and we will strive to constantly improve and update our performance with exciting content.

2. Was it easy to find the right combination of people for the show?

The most important characteristic we look out for is definitely passion and determination. It is an added bonus if one is talented in various fields as well. NANTA is a live performance, so being able to react quickly and think on your feet is a good quality to have too. We won’t say that it was easy, but we are very thankful for the hardworking and passionate cast we have with us now.

3. How long do you take to practice for each act?

There isn’t a specific number of hours we practice each day or for each act. However, our training prior to performing on stage lasts for 12 hours every day from 10am to 10pm. The 12 hours are divided into two parts where the first 6 hours consist of acting (Drama class) and the second 6 hours consist of practicing rhythm and beats. Some actors even practice more than the official 12 hours to master the skills.

4. What’s your favorite act in the entire show? (Responses are from the cast)

  • Tae Wan Kim: The clapping scene of the head chef is one of my favourite parts of the show. It is great to watch the “teamwork” between the audience and the head chef.
  • Chang Hwan Ko: I would say the beginning of NANTA, where the chefs appear in the darkness, is a ‘must watch’ moment in NANTA. It is a great combination of Korean traditional elements and Western elements.
  • Hye Jin Yun: The ending scene, where we all drum together, is the climax of NANTA. There is a feeling of catharsis that rises due to the drumming beats. Sometimes, people in the audience cry because of the overwhelming experience.
  • Ho Yeoul Sul: I also agree with Chang Hwan. The beginning, which we all call “the prologue scene” is one of the best parts of NANTA.
  • Dong Hoon Nam: The beginning without a doubt!

5. In all your travels, what’s one of the most memorable moment for the cast?

We think that the most memorable moment for all NANTA actors would be the moment we get the beats and rhythm correct. The feeling of accomplishment is something that cannot easily be compared to anything else.
