Best Age to Learn Music

Everyone loves music! Besides bringing joy to one’s soul, music has the uncanny ability to teach kids about delayed gratification and help them in their physical skills. With such tangible and intangible benefits, parents are always asking … What is best age to learn Music? Do I start off my kids on the piano or do I start them on another instrument.

Numerous questions run through a Parent’s mind around these tough issues and opinions are varied. However, parents do agree that music is helpful for every child.

In an academic environment like Singapore, we have all heard stories about children starting music too early. No kid likes musical drills especially when they can be out of the house, enjoying the sun!  However, there is growing research which says that starting music from 0 to 9 years is important.  During this time, the mental structures and mechanisms associated with processing and understanding music are in the prime stages of development, making it of utmost importance to expose children in this age range to music.

AGE MILESTONES TO LEARN MUSIC

Experts say that children at a young age should be exposed to instruments  to gain experience and not to master them. They should go for “classes” to learn how to develop meaningful relationships with music and not for the musical scales and theory. If this is one’s goal,  “lessons” can and should start soon after birth and certainly within the child’s first year.

Following Informal activities with music after birth, more systematic classes can start at age three and formal lessons with the goal of learning the instrument should start between six and nine. Keep in mind that these are only guidelines; exceptions will undoubtedly occur based on the child and/or teacher. Musical experience at an early age is extremely important in a child’s developmental process. Like riding a bike or learning a language, these skills can be learned later in life, but they will never be “natural” in the way that is so important for fluid musical performance.

With these suggested milestones in mind…I decided that  it was time for my kids to pick up formal music lessons, as they are all now in Primary School. Last holiday, we discovered Aureus Academy.  Boasting of an army of teachers with a degree in music, we were glad to have discovered this Music school at Forum Galleria.

Aureus Academy

Experience at Aureus Academy

We signed the kids up for Piano lessons during the December holidays, as we were not sure how they would take to the music lessons. The great thing about Aureus Academy is that they allow for lessons to be paid on a monthly basis. In that way, the kids can drop off at any time with minimum fuss.

Booking and arranging classes at the Aureus Academy is relatively simple as all class schedules are available online. And whenever there is a break in the lessons due to public holidays such as Christmas, the school will automatically send parents an email to keep parents in the loop. This form of communication is so important, as sometimes the kids can forget to pass messages to their parents! 🙂

At the end of the holiday classes, we can safely report that the kids enjoyed the classes. The teachers were patient and the music exposure was good effective use of their holiday time. We could not continue our classes as Nicole is taking her PSLE this year. However, she can’t wait to resume classes at the end of the year when the holidays come back again.
