Bak Kut Teh (Free Dining Vouchers)

Sponsored Review

If you work in the Tanjong Pagar or Raffles Place area, you would be familiar with Far East Square. This dining hub, which houses numerous restaurants, is not just a great place for lunch, but for tea and dinner as well. Recently, we went on a Far East Square Food trail, and we got to experience some of the dining options at the square. Last weekend we went back again, and this time we went for the local favorite Bak Kut Teh.

The restaurant’s name is B.K.T (located next to Ya Kun Coffee and Toast), and it is touted as the original recipe for Bak Kut Teh. In case you don’t know, Bak Kut Teh  literally means “Meat Bone Soup”, and it consists mainly of Pork Ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices.

Once entering the shop, you will realize that B.K.T has been highly rated by many local food experts. The walls are filled with awards and menus stating the house specials for the outlet.

Customers will be glad to know that B.K.T does not just serve the normal Teochew style Bak Kut Teh that we are all familiar with, but a Klang Style Bak Kut Teh as well. Both are cooked very differently.

How did we find the food?

Surprisingly, we did not really favor the Bak Kut Teh in the outlet. We actually preferred the other dishes which they specialized in. However, to be fair, there are a lot of different types on Bak Kut Teh on the market, and everyone flocks to the restaurants which are more suited to their taste. Some people prefer their soups with more pepper, while others may prefer their soups more herbal. This Teochew Bak Kut Teh with its clear broth, was not spicy and tasty enough for us. The meat was also not soft enough for us. Perhaps they were having an “off” day, as we were their last customer.

As for the Klang Style Bak Kut Teh, this was our first time tasting it. The taste of the meat and soup did not really find favor with us, and therefore, we don’t think we will order it again.

However, there are some dishes at B.K.T that we liked.

In Singapore, it is difficult to find the Black K.L Hokkien Mee. However the restaurant serves this dish, fried together with Pig lard which although very unhealthy, bring out the extra Oomph in every dish! 🙂

Another dish worth a mention is the KL Fish Head Mee Hoon. Using a giant grouper fish and served with picked mustard, this dish was really tasty and satisfying. As a testament to its broth, the kids ended up fighting for the soup, which had been heated over a slow fire for a few hours.

If you are thinking of dropping by B.K.T, a good time to go will be over the weekends, as traffic in the CBD is generally lower on the weekends.
