Singapore Youth Olympic Games Theme Song

Why so ungracious?

It is 28 more days to the Singapore Youth Olympic Games and people are slamming JJ Lin’s song for the Youth Olympic Games.

For those who are unaware of the saga, JJ Lin has been singing a cheer entitled  “You are the One Singapore” and it is commissioned by the Singapore Sports Council.

Netizens in Singapore have been very busy criticizing the song online and have even a page dedicated to hating the cheer titled, “No offence, but the YOG song by JJ Lin Sounds Retarded”. Some people even don’t like it so much that they are using vulgarity to express their disdain for the song.

Hmmm…

Well on the other side…the official YOG theme song has been receiving positive responses from the public. Hype Records’ Ken Lim is responsible for its music and lyrics.

The song is performed by local and International artistes that include Jody Williams (Africa), Singapore Idol 2nd Runner-up Tabitha Nauser, Sean Kingston (US), Steve Appleton (UK) and Jessica Mauboy (Australia).

Personally, I do agree that the theme song is much better. However, my kids who are in pre-school love the JJ Lin version a lot. They asked to watch the video again and again, and they were happy to say “O Yeah, O yeah, O yeah, Hey!”

Although I can’t really imagine a whole crowd singing this to cheer at the stadium, I think that it is a little harsh to create a mean Facebook Page about it…especially when the Whole World is watching us. In this inaugural Youth Olympics, there’s a internal strife in the host country over a cheer! It would definitely seem wiser to show a more gracious Singapore that is embracing different forms of music, rather than one that is mean and vindictive.

And my heart goes to JJ Lin… instead of creating an opportunity to have a big break for his career…he is now caught in a middle of a silly storm!

Singaporeans complain too much! It’s as if each one of them (those who complained and criticized) can create a better song! tsk.

Ya…Sometimes we shld just focus on celebrating the success of getting the Olympics rather than just criticizing every initaitve to promote it!

People aren’t complaining for fun, the song does sound retarded and most of us don’t want to be associated with it.

People who suggest that if you complain you should do it yourself are just as retarded. Do you think there was a nationwide invitation for suggestions? No. If unknown singapreans sent in their cheers, would the sports council use it even if it was better? No.

Bottom line is, if you like the song, either you are a 3 yr old or you only have the intelligence of one.

Actually, today I heard on the radio that TNP is offering citizens to join a contest to write their own cheer. So maybe more people will take on the challenge and write a cheer instead.

The contest also proves that the organizers are learning from their mistakes. And I think Clement Chow – the guy who wrote “Count on Me Singapore” was a Nobody when it made its debut in the 1990s. So i think the nation does listen to the word on the street and songs from a Nobody.

Don’t worry. I am ok with the abusive comments, altghough I do think that they are a bit inappropriate for a family blog. But i think it does take someone really special to be as passionate about the YOG cheer as yourself.

Hopefully the cheer is not getting to you too much. On my side, i am sleeping well at night.

When i hear the cheer, i can’t help but think of old aunties dressed in fishnet stocking, polka dot skirts with strawberries accessories in their hair – taiwanese fashion, stupid pseudo english names like fish and apple, and all other tastless things. There’s a reason that guy didn’t make it big in Singapore.

I am sure that JJ lin will make it big in due season. Singapore does not have much local talent to export, and we shld be supportive of those that try to step out!

Oops, sorry i didn’t realise this was a family blog. My comments were inappropriate. No sarcasm intended.

Thank u so much for your feedback and hopefully singapore will have a new cheer soon!

Hope to see u back here again.
