INDOCAFE–Peranakan food
Sponsored Review
Driving down Scotts Road, one will always notice these beautifully restored Pre-War Bungalows. If you look closer, you will realize that these beautiful buildings are the residences of INDOCAFE – the white house which offers distinctive Peranakan food in the heart of the city.
With Chinese New Year just round the corner, and everyone is looking for a great place to have their Reunion Dinner, INDOCAFE might just be the place that you are looking for. From 18 January to 18 February, the restaurant will be offering its first ever Chinese New Year reunion set.
We have never set foot in this little enclave before, and upon entering the bungalows, we were pleasantly welcomed by the warm hospitality of the service staff and the cosy ambience. With its many private rooms, this restaurant is a great place to bring your date and family for a private intimate meal. As we settled down, we were in for a treat, as we were invited to sample the lavish 10 course harvest of Abundance & Fortune Reunion menu! A perfect way to usher in the New Year with its standout Yu Sheng and Pen Chai dishes.
As a native Singaporean, I have eaten many Yu Sheng’s in my life. However, the Yu Sheng at INDOCAFE definitely comes with a very different twist. With its pleasant Peranakan sauces and a generous serving of Mekajiki, Salmon and Tuna, this Yu Sheng is certainly a mouth watering experience. Forget about the boring old Yu Sheng’s that you are used to, as this platter offers something very different and it is one dish you should savour for yourself.
Next up was one of my favourite dishes of the night. As a lover of seafood and especially King Crabs, I devoured the King Crab with Emping Cracker. With a Generous serving of my favourite crab meat, it was certainly one dish to look forward to. Yes! This is not crab meat from Cold Storage, nor are they shreded surimi crab sticks, so the meat is succulent and delicious! Combined together with the Luscious Pei Tee Scallop and Silken Bibik Jellyfish Salad with Abalone, this was a seafood platter that will whet the appetites of any seafood lover. My kids loved the big fat scallop on top of the Pie Tee. They don’t know exactly what scallops are, but they don’t mind the taste!
No Chinese Dinner will be complete without Soup. The Glorious Fortune Consommé offers oyster, sea moss, fresh wong bok greens and premium Karobuta Pork Ribs simmered to perfection. All essential ingredients that speak of Good Fortune!
One of the most kid friendly dishes of the night was the fork tender Kurobuta Pork belly meat served in a savoury fermented bean paste marinade. Nathan just called it “Pork Chop”, and this was the main dish to him!
As with any 10 course dinner, there are other favourites like Jumbo Tiger Prawns, Baba styled roasted chicken, Red Garoupa with Nonya spices. All the dishes come with the Peranakan twist in their spices, so the whole menu is certainly different from the norm.
Another dish worth a mention is the Keluak fried rice with its lavish ingredients of prawns, dry scallops and crab meat.
If you are wondering how to get to the restaurant, you will be glad to know that Newton MRT is just 5 minutes away. For those that are driving, the restaurant premises offers FREE parking, and with the distinct colonial structures, you should be able to pick up INDOCAFE from amongst the modern buildings nearby.
If you have friends from outside the country, you can bring them to INDOCAFE to experience the daily high tea, that comes complete with the Indonesian Cultural dance. This is definitely a great place to relax, sit back and have a great time with your friends.
The ten-course Magnificent Harvest of Abundance & Fortune Reunion Menu is priced at S$368++ for 4 persons, $478++ for 6 persons and $688++ for 8 persons.
The Bountiful Harvest Deluxe Pen Chai dish is priced at $228++ when dining in and at $238+ as a take-away option. The Flourishing Brilliance Yu Sheng is available with the Magnificent Harvest of Abundance & Fortune
Reunion Menu. It can also be ordered separately as a dine-in à la carte or take-away option where diners get to bring home the Yu Sheng for another round of the auspicious toss with family and friends; both similarly priced at $88++ with abalone and $68++ without.
