Golden Sands Resort Penang
Sponsored Review
Penang is one of the “Hotspot”for Singapore families, and the Golden Sands Resort Penang, is one of the top hotels for Singaporeans. Run by luxury brand Shangri-La, this beach resort located along Batu Ferringhi, is ideally located, and offers great value for families.
Located just next to Shangri-la Penang, Golden Sands Beach Resort is priced for the discerning family traveler, and catered for families. Built with 387 furnished guestrooms and suites, rooms are well sized with many rooms coming with Murphy Beds (pull-down retractable wall beds). Occupancy rates at the hotel are high, and for our invite we had adjoining rooms. Rooms are spacious enough for a 3rd bed, and therefore well-equipped to handle a family of 4 (Room pictured does not come with the Murphy Bed option.)
Although the hotel is due for a makeover and a bit dated, the large grounds make up for some of the hotel’s shortcomings. One of the advantages of staying at the Golden Sands Resort is the facilities within the resort.
The Cool lounge located next to the lobby, is a station for an array of amusement and modern conveniences. There are board games for the kids to discover, and Internet plus games stations for the kids. Adults can also sit down and order some tea, while the kids entertain themselves in the lounge.
Adventure Zone is a comprehensive indoor playground located within the compounds of the hotel. For us, this is one of the highlights of staying in the hotel. Armed with thrilling drop slides, kids and adults alike get to experience a vertical drop of 7.3 meters when one sits at the top of the “Demon Drop”. My eldest girl was really “gung-ho” and she was willing to try out every slide. For the rest of us, we had to pluck out courage, in order to try out the slides. Check out all the priceless expressions, as we pushed past our comfort zones! 🙂

For hotel guests with kids, there is an added option of leaving your kids with the Cool Zone Kids’ Club. There are specially organized activities for kids from 5 to 12 yo and daily from 0930 to 2100 hrs. Kids join on a complimentary basis and are accorded 2 complimentary daily meals per child. Activities include sand sculpture, arts and crafts, cooking lessons, Wii competitions and much more.
No hotel can be complete without a swimming pool. With 2 pool areas, and a water slide to boost, the kids were keen to take afternoon off for some splashing good times. For kids who can’t swim there a re lots of life guards around to ensure there are extra eyes on the kids.
The best part about being located at Batu Ferringhi, is that the famous night markets are just outside the hotel. One does not need to walk very far to find a good bargain, nor to find food and entertainment for the night. For Fast food junkies, Mcdonald’s is located just outside the hotel.
Service at the Golden Sands Resort may not be as prompt, as those enjoyed at Shangri-la, but the resort does make up for it in terms of its facilities.
For families, do check out the Golden Sands Resort for promotions. Currently, there is a package at MYR615 per night, for 2 adults and 2 kids (including breakfast and prices subjected to tax). Package includes entry to Adventure Zone. Do check the website for all the details.
