Din Tai Fung Mini Chef Workshop
Everyone loves good food, and we were delighted when we were invited by Din Tai Fung for a special event. Hosting us at their latest outlet in Bedok Mall, we were ready for some great fun at Din Tai Fung’s Mini Chef Workshop and High Tea session.
And Yes! We were going to learn how to make Din Tai Fung’s legendary Xiao Long Pau or otherwise known as Steamed Pork Dumplings. The truth to be told, Daddy has rarely stepped into the kitchen since he has gotten married. Therefore, making these intricate dumplings was definitely going to be a challenge! However, we were “game” for the challenge! 🙂
To make the process easier for us amateur cooks, the chef taught us how to make red bean paste dumplings, instead of the famous award winning ones, which are stuffed with meat and soup. Frankly, it was good that they tried to make things easier for us, as the workmanship involved in these dumplings are definitely considerable, and something that I struggled to master 🙂
Before we set off on our cooking adventure, the chef demonstrated to us the process of making a dumpling. As expected, all the dough is made from scratch, and measured to perfection with a set mold. All dumplings cannot be bigger that 6.5 cm in diameter and ingredients are further weighed, to ensure consistency.
The most intricate part of the whole process is actually the folding of the dumplings. Each dumpling has 18 folds, and one must be able to keep the filling within the dough, as you make the familiar shape of the dumpling. Was not easy! Check out Nicole’s creations versus my creations. As you can, my dumplings really “Cannot make it!”
And any workshop cannot be complete, unless we have food! After our feeble attempts at making dumplings, we were thankfully served the “real thing” from the kitchen. I safely report that we had no problems finishing the food, as Din Tai Fung served us our favorite dishes.
Overall, we had great fun, and do keep a lookout for their next workshop, as it is a guaranteed fun experience for the whole family.
