CATS the musical!
Have you heard? Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s record breaking, smash hit musical “Cats” is in town! This is one of the longest running musicals on Broadway and West End, (the first show opened in 1981!) and CATS has won the Best Musical at the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Tony Awards. If you love musicals, this is one that you have to catch! 🙂
Personally, I’m not a fan of felines, and my wife is worse. She has a bad case of cat phobia. However, she was able to put that aside to surround herself with cats of various sizes and shapes, to go for CATS, at the Grand Theatre, Marina Bay Sands.
CATS is based on a classic Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot. Music is composed by the very talented Andrew Lloyd Webber and produced by Cameron Mackintosh. This hit musical has been so well-loved that it has been translated to more than 20 languages and travelled round the world many times. Fact Nugget: CATS was in Singapore back in 1993 in Kallang Theatre and 2009 in Esplanade Theatre. With these accolades, it is no wonder that there was lots of excitement in the air before the show started.
If you don’t already know, the storyline is simple: A tribe of cats coming together at the Jellicle Ball, and through a series of song and dance, they audition for a chance to be reborn into a new life. The musical arrangement is simply awesome, especially with the very beautiful and unforgettable ballad—Memory. While enjoying the singing, one is also caught up with the magical display of lights and the choreography. Special mention for one of the longest and toughest dance sequences in any musical—the Jellicle Ball scene. Totally Smashing!
One fact that helped transport the audience into the junkyard world with the cats running and jumping around was the very spectacular stage set. Take a look!
So how did CATS survive through the years? What made it timeless? I feel, besides the great music and dance, one huge factor is the amazing costumes and make-up for the cast. The costumes are tailored individually with stunning details, and the make-up looks perfect from start to end. I can imagine the actors need lots of powder on their faces to prevent their make-up from running when they start to sweat!
Do catch this breathtakingly energetic show. It is definitely a musical classic, and you will be entertained. Meow.
