The Lion King Musical Review

The Lion King Musical is back in town! If you love theatre or you want to expose your kids to musicals, this is the “Must Catch” musical for the whole family.  Based on the cartoon produced by Walt Disney, this is the musical that will always take your breath away and leave you standing on your seats.

In her repeat performance in Singapore, “The Lion King” musical returns with overwhelming ticket sales as the show not only offers strong memorable songs but a story-line that is easy to digest. There is no need to re-think or re-watch any portions of the musical, as one does not need to read between the lines to enjoy “The Lion King”.

It is therefore not surprising that The Lion King musical has played to more than 90 Million people and the production is now in it’s 21st year. The show has also earned more than US$7.9 billion and 6 Tony Awards. The show is famous for an endearing story-line where audiences will simply love to journey together with young Simba as he grows from a young pup to a majestic lion. It also helps that the show is produced by some of the best creative people on Broadway, including acclaimed director Julie Taymor and multi-award winning musicians Elton John and Tim Rice.

It is also heartening to know that a Singaporean is playing a significant role in this production of The Lion King. One of the highlights of the show is the bold use of puppets. Singaporean Tim Lucas is in charge of about 235 puppets, including animatronic and cable suspension puppets. In fact, the donning of animal puppets while still allowing audiences to see the performer’s face is what makes this production so unique. Kudos to Tim for following his dream and being part of a Internationally reknown musical.

If you want to help your young ones to enjoy the story even more, you can get them to watch the cartoon “The Lion King” by Walt Disney, as the plot follows the animated film closely. And of course, the most memorable song is “The Circle of Life”, where most people who grew up in the 1990s will find very familiar.

This is a great musical for a date night or a family outing with the kids!
