Movie Review – Mulan

I am a real movie addict and on Monday, I had the privilege to attend the gala event for the movie “Mulan” at Shaw Lido. I happened to get tickets due to Omy.sg and I love watching premieres as they give you a chance to watch a movie before everyone else! 😛

Many thanks to OMY and a big thumbs-up to the organizers!

Set in 450AD, China was in dire straits, as her enemies had put her under extreme pressure. Facing a formidable enemy, a nation- wide draft was carried out, to ensure that China had enough soldiers to fight the war.

Despite his deteriorating health, retired soldier Hua Hu insisted on enlisting so as to contribute his utmost for the country. However, this decision greatly distresses his daughter Mulan. Being exceptionally skilled in martial arts, she decides to dress up as a boy to replace her father to fight the war.

If u think that the actress playing “Mulan” looks familiar, you are RIGHT!

She is none other than Vicki Zhao Wei. If you are a fan of the Chinese serial Huan Zhu Ge Ge, you will definitely know who and what I am talking about! Well, as Mulan, Vicki is thoroughly convincing, and she looks good at it as well!

Another plus point about the movie, is the stellar cast of Chen Kun, Hu Jun and Jaycee Chan.

Being a guy, I like the action sequences a lot. I also enjoy movies about bravery and fighting against insurmountable odds. Well, going along these lines – the movie does not fail to deliver.

The concept of a girl dressing up as a boy, makes me think of GI Jane or Rambo!

In fact, Mulan  does live up to the tag of G.I Jane – an All American Hero!

She proves to be a great fighter when she goes to war, and is a real inspiration to the Chinese Army. And my oh my…Mulan can really fight!

Adding balance to the movie, one of the most memorable scenes in the movie is Mulan’s demonstration of filial piety . This scene really touched my heart, and the fact that she was willing to lay down her life for her father, really made me want to appreciate my family a lot more!

My verdict:

If you are looking to be entertained, this movie has got to be it! With a touching plot intertwined with sword fighting action, this movie hits the mark!

The tear-jerking scenes also makes it a show that your wife or girlfriend will enjoy as well! ( I am saying this, as my wife is not into action movies).

My Rating: 4 out 5 stars!
