My Fair Lady Review
Growing up with my VCR, one of my favourite musicals that I loved to watch was “My Fair Lady”! And I thought that it was “blooming grand” that we were invited to the Opening Night of this legendary musical. It was definitely like having…”Lots of chocolate for me to eat…”
My Fair Lady is a musical about Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a well-born lady. Through the training, she is transformed into a true lady, while Professor Higgins definitely got more than what he bargained for.
Personally, I grew up with the Oscar Winning film version, where the the casting of Audrey Hepburn instead of Julie Andrews as Eliza was controversial, partly because theatregoers regarded Andrews as perfect for the part. Hepburn was a genuine silver screen beauty, but dubbed over her vocals just to be on the safe side!
Don’t worry, as nothing of that sort will be happening at this production of “My Fair Lady”. The cast did a great rendition of the Musical, and we had great fun, listening to our favourite songs. I definitely enjoyed listen to “On the Street where you live” and “Wouldn’t it be lovely”. The whole musical brings you on a trip down memory lane, and coupled together with the witty script, you will have an enjoyable night at the theatre.
If you are looking for a great night out, and maybe taking the time to celebrate this Valentine season with a loved one, do check out “My Fair Lady” at Marina Bay Sands. The original production of “My Fair Lady” won six Tony Awards, and received four more nominations in 1957 in the outstanding musical category.
My Fair Lady runs until March 2 at the Marina Bay Sands Theatre. Tickets from S$95 to S$195 from SISTIC.
