Family activities at CIty Square Mall

Media Invite

The school holidays are here, and if you are wondering what to do, here are some fun activities, that families can experience at City Square Mall. Located just next to Farrer Park Mrt, this is a mall that one can venture to, when one gets tired of beating the crowds at Orchard Road and other suburban malls. With a good selection of anchor talents such as Fair Price, Golden Village and Metro, there is something for everyone here.

Invited to experience the family activities at City Square Mall, we were excited to find out what this suburban mall could offer. Here is a list of fun activities at City Square Mall:

  1. Global Art

I remember going for Art Classes when I was young. Back then, there weren’t a lot of enrichment classes to explore. As a young boy with identity issues, the ability to develop some form of artistic talent, would definitely help one adapt better in school. Unfortunately, I was not blessed with such talents.

Introducing Global Art! A systematic programme designed to encourage students to develop their creative skills, broaden their creative thinking, and deepen their interest in art.

I remember my art teacher just putting a bowl of fruits on the table, and just asking me to draw. With my lack of talent, such vague instructions was just too difficult for me to handle. Global Art has a system, that is designed to instill visualization, comprehension,  and allows kids to understand the use of background, colors and composition.

The curriculum is definitely useful as one is able to understand important concepts like shadowing and light sources to bring out the best of a picture. Here we are being taught the basic concepts of acrylic painting before we started on our uhmmm “Masterpiece”…

The Good News is that whenever we were stuck, our art teacher was there ready to jump in, and give us advice on how to move the project forward. We are definitely novices when it comes to art, and although we do not spend much time in the art room, it was a fun family bonding project.

2. WIngstop

Who loves Chicken Wings?

Singaporeans love food, and everyone loves their KFC! However, if you are daring to try something different, you have got to try out Wingstop for yourself.

Wing stop

Decked in chic American Decor, WIngstop is probably the king of chicken wings in Singapore! Looking at their menu, one quickly realizes that they have chicken wings in various styles and sauces that will suit a wide range of tastes.

City square all

Offering Boneless chicken wings or traditionally styled chicken wings, one can decide which chicken suits your style. Personally, i preferred the traditional chicken wings with bones and all. The boneless chicken wings, may look better for ladies who don’t want to get their hands dirty, but eating your wings with all your 10 fingers, is the way to go! Trust me, when I tell you, that they taste different without the bones! 🙂

At Wingstop, there are 11 flavors to choose from: Original Hot, Cajun, Atomic, Mild, Teriyaki, Lemon Pepper, Hawaiian, Garlic Parmesan, Hickory Smoked BBQ, Louisiana Rub and Oriental Soy Pepper.

I like my chicken wings dry, so my personal preference is the Garlic Parmesan and Lemon Pepper.

My wife who loves a bit of vinegar in her chicken, likes the Original Hot (Which is the hot seller in the US),  and the Teriyaki chicken.

If you like your chicken hot, go for the Atomic, which is definitely spicy. I normally enjoy my curry, but I found the wings too “Hot” for me too. On a scale of 5, the “Hot”chicken is on the 4-4.5 side. After taking 1 piece, i had to drown my tongue in a cup of water, so as to recover from the flames! 🙂 Don’t worry, if you love your spice, I am sure that the Original Hot is worth sampling!

We love Chicken wings, and we have been back a few times after writing the post. For pricing, one must think about fast food around Carl Jr. prices.

Wingstop has got 2 outlets. One at Bedok Mall, and the other at City Square Mall.

3. Cocoa Colony

cocoa colony

Every family loves chocolate! Having Cocoa in your ice cream, or in your beverage, might just be the shot that you need, to perk up your day! 🙂

Inspired by the chocolate cafes found in the Republic of Ecuador and conceptualised in Singapore, Cocoa Colony launched its first outlet in Singapore at Shaw Centre on Scotts Road in December 2014. Currently, there are 7 outlets in Singapore and they plan to open more outlets in 2016. Serving avant-garde cocoa beverages, crafted chocolate bars, lava flowing hot chocolate sauce, gourmet coffee, gelato and desserts, the café chain seeks to target the masses.

Walking past Cocoa Colony, one is automatically attracted to the Colonial East India theme, which is uniformly decked throughout all their outlets. Together with the Intriguing origins of Cocoa Colony on the cafe walls, one is drawn to the story of Cocoa ingrained on the walls of each outlet.

Upon our research on the company, we discovered that Cocoa Colony gets its chocolate from all over the world, where the team takes an average of 2 months to develop a recipe, going through various rounds of taste testing, then blind tastings, before the item is introduced on the menu at their cafés. Needless to say, if u love chocolate, you have to try their chocolate items on their menu.

The MUST TRY  items include Cocoa Colony’s signature creations – specially crafted chocolate drinks (cocoa 100, cocoa 76, cocoa 38, cocoa with baileys/cointreau), the Cocoa Colony gelato made from peanut butter with signature chocolate sauce, Cocoa Bola (a crispy pastry coated with many layers of chocolate), as well as the “Amazonian Liquid Gold”, the brand’s premium chocolate sauce dispensed from their signature chocolate taps in the store which can be used as a dip for pastries, gelatos as well as drinks.

We learnt a very valuable tip! Chocolate tastes better when it’s warm. Think of your glass of Ice Chocolate and your mug of Hot Chocolate. The hot drink brings out the essence of the cocoa much better! That’s how you should drink your chocolate. Hot!

If you have a spouse or friends, who have been persuading you to cut down on your chocolate intake, here are some arguments, that will help you in your fight for more chocolate. Chocolate is know to be able to relieve depression, strengthen the cardiovascular system, help  reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure,

Good news is that even with high quality chocolate being used, the pricing used not overtly expensive or too gourmet for the public. With their products affordable to the average consumer, Cocoa Colony is worth a visit! 🙂

Cocoa Colony has got 7 outlets, and you can find them at City Square Mall. For other places, do visit Cocoa Colony.

4. Genius R Us

genuis r us

Genius R Us is an enrichment center for kids that offers education in a fun way! Empowered with flour, chocolate icing and simple recipes, kids learn to bake and discover their love for food in the kitchen!

The recipe for the day when we went was Mini Lemon Cake. It looked simple enough with the ingredient listed on the board. The first step was to measure out everything. It was great fun for the kids as they poured out flour, scooped sugar and cut butter specific to what is required. Lots of precision needed and definitely patience too! (Imagine scooping out spoon after spoon of sugar!)

baking workshop

After that, the instructors explained the steps we needed to take. E.g. Sifting the flour, creaming the butter and sugar etc. It was interesting that when instructions were given, they also explained which apparatus or crockery to use. The instructors would stand aside to watch us and would only step in to assist when necessary.

Check out the smiley faces as we prepared the cakes!

cake baking

While we waited for the cakes to bake, we started decorating the cake boxes. It was very fun as the kids thought of creative drawings and pictures. And when the cake was ready, the smell was so heavenly! The entire kitchen was filled with lovely butter cake smells!

And the final step was to personalise our cakes! You could use lemon glaze and sprinklers. And the kids all went overdrive with the colorful sprinklers! Look at our final product! Trust me, it tastes super!!!
