Choosing a Domestic Helper
We just reached another milestone in our family. As fulltime parents endowed with 3 kids, we constantly need extra help around the house! For the last 8 years, we have been blessed to have Filipino Domestic helpers to help out around the house with domestic duties such as cooking, but also to be our extra hands and legs, to look after the kids.
Recently, due to some family issues at home, our latest helper Jingle (who has been with us for the last 4 years), had to abruptly end her contract and go home. This is definitely traumatic for us, as Jingle helps out with the cooking, household matters, and most importantly, the arrangements for the children at school.
With her going…now we have to start the headache again of choosing a new helper…
We have to get use to someone new staying with us, and most of all, we need to make a good employment choice….
When we were looking for our first domestic helper, we did our research and we looked into details like “Can she cook?”, “Can she speak Good English?”, “Is she quick on her feet?”, “Is she vain?”, “Is she the playful type?”…so many questions ya….
While similarly, on the other side of the coin, the potential domestic helper may be asking,”Is the family nice?”, “Is the Sir going to be up to any funny business?”, “Will the family let me use a handphone?”, “How many off days do I get?”
As you can see, no one is sure of each other…and both sides are keeping their fingers crossed. Feels like your First Date ya…except now…I am putting my whole family into the pot…
To cut the long story short…we just employed a new helper, and she is from Myanmar…we are praying that she will be honest and reliable, as this are the first few qualities that we look for. Things are looking good so far…as she tells me that she has a habit to fast twice a week…wa…that is more than me! And she wakes up every morning at 5am to pray!!! I am impressed!
On a side note, the kids made a teary goodbye to Aunty Jing last weekend…check out the authentic and touching letters, the kids made for her.
Aunty Jing – the family misses you and we hope that u are adjusting well to life back in Philippines!
