Map Reading and Family Fun!
Advertorial
Orientation and Map Reading are one of the skills that we picked up in the army. Although these skills are not as essential with the invention of the GPS, we still need to learn the simple basics, to truly become a good navigator. With the June school holidays, we wanted the kids to pick up a new skill, rather than spending their time on a tablet. We were therefore very excited, when we were invited for latest family event at Bishan Park. Entitled “The Amazing Duo”, this is an activity where father and son/daughter get to bond over an Orientation program within the confines of the Park.
And the Good News is that my kids loved it! Although there was a lot of running around to find the check points, my kids loved the good old fashioned “Treasure Hunt!” with the use of a compass and a map.
Besides the traditional Ice breakers to loosen the kids and parents up, the kids were taught how to read bearings and how to orientate their map using a compass. All these tasks were made simple, as we had our ever-friendly instructor Sebby, to instruct the kids, as well as to refresh Daddy’s memory about the simple basics.
Besides making the basic course easier for the kids, the kids were looking forward to find the checkpoints. Through the use of electronic sensors, the kids were looking forward to register their efforts on finding each checkpoint. These sensors added an extra dimension to the whole game!
When we reached the finish line, the electronic sensors were able to give us a printout of the checkpoints that we have completed. With the time taken for each checkpoint, we were able to assess the progress of our little adventure, and the time taken from point to point. The wonders of modern technology!
At the end of the games, the kids were rewarded with a certificate of completion to celebration their journey. As you can tell, my little ones were delighted with the course.
This was the first time that we have attended an event organized by the People’s Association, and the family had great fun. We looked through the catalogue of activities organized by P.A, and we were surprised by the numerous number of choices which they offered to the public. From Facebook Marketing, Wine tasting to Home Decor, they have many different activities for every household. So before the holiday ends, do check out People’s Association for more details for the family.
