Dengue and the Aedes Mosquito

I never thought that I could become a victim of dengue! Worse still, I got it twice!!!

The Aedes mosquito seems so small and innocuous, that you think that the critters can never become a threat to your family. However, I seem to have broken all the odds, by getting the virus twice. Sounds like a near impossible situation right!

Personally, I thought that getting it once, would mean that I would be immune to the virus, and that I would have Super Mutant Powers, that would enable me to walk safely through a swarm of Aedes Mosquitos. However, it seems that the Aedes Mosquito is more powerful than the X-men! Smile

Yes! These little parasites are very resilient, as there are 4 different strands of the dengue virus, and one can possibly come down with dengue for a total of 4 times! I definitely hope that the 3rd or 4th time will not happen, as if that really happens, I should make my way to the Casinos at Genting or Marina Bay Sands, to maximize my “lucky streak!” Smile  Seriously, I will not want that to happen, as the last time I was down with the virus, I was knocked out on the hospital bed for 2 weeks!

Scary hor!

If you are thinking of how to outsmart these mosquitos, and you are thinking of staying indoors to minimize outdoor exposure, here are my Top 3 interesting facts about the Aedes Mosquito.

1. The Aedes Mosquito is ONLY Active in the day!

Yes! if you think that you will be safer if you head straight home after work, you are mistaken. You can party all night and still be very safe! The Aedes Mosquito is NOT a Night Bird, and One sting from these Aedes critters in the daytime, will get you infected.

2. If you spot Mosquito Eggs in Vases, just pouring away the water is NOT Enough!

I used to think that just pouring away the water will solve the whole Aedes Mosquito problem. However, these Mosquitos are super resilient, that in order for you to KILL them, you will need to SCRUB the inside of Vases as well. Tests have shown that when you pour water back into these infected vases, the eggs will come back to life!!! Yes! It’s like your worse HORROR Movie coming to past!

3. Dengue Mosquitos were NOT killed by the Haze!

Mosquitos are NOT affected by the Haze. They continue to thrive due to warm temperatures, and the increase in this year’s cases is due to a change in Dengue strands or serotype. It is not a mutation, but the change of serotype happens every few years, and 2013 is smack right in this change.

As you can see, these mosquitos are resilient, and everyone of us needs to play an active role to make our homes safe!  To find out more about the Aedes Mosquito, do head over to the NEA Website.
