Are Singaporeans the most unhappy people?

According to a Gallup Survey in 2012, Singaporeans are one of the world’s unhappiest people. Singaporeans were apparently less upbeat than the people in places like Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan and Haiti.

Isn’t that terrible!

The “complain” culture of Singaporeans seems to be getting us down, but the thing is, there is always something to complain about. Today it is the housing problem, tomorrow it is the high COEs. One never seems to fail to find a new topic in busy Singapore. Which is why they say, if we are able to abase and abound, and learn contentment, it is of great gain

Which is why this video brings out the Simple but important attributes of finding happiness in life! Throw in the native Singaporean who can speak great mandarin, and we have another timely reminder of how far we have come! After all, this is the only place in the world where we can live in harmony with various races, and enjoy each other’s company without any animosity. Isn’t that something worth celebrating about!

Singaporeans are one of the most unique peoples (sorry if that is bad English…even English has its oddities such as how to pluralise ‘peoples’) in the world. I should know; i have visted India several times, and lived in Malaysia, China, Canada, Germany, South Africa, the USA; and (now for four plus years) Singapore. I really do like Singapore (apart from the heat) but I do not like the lack of political freedom (no demonstrations without a license from the police means this is similar to China in terms of actual freedom of speech); lack of freedom to drive a car without a mortgage (obscene COE prices that reveal a truly greedy government); and a real lack of locals’ ability to mingle, mix and gel with ‘foreigners.’ To me, because most Singaporeans are Chinese blood and culture, they have little incentive (as do most Chinese) to examine, investigate, and explore other cultures. They are spoilt, really and it is the ‘pampering’ Singaporean government that is to blame. Like the British, Singaporeans are just too inward-looking and care too little about the rest of the world and its needs. To me, this is the biggest drawback to living in Singapore and, while i am here i truly hope i can help locals to stop being so culturally selfish and introverted. If ten percent of Singaporeans could move overseas and live in the USA or Canada or even the UK (though you really need to be quite wealthy now to love in London, for example and that means actual cash not paper assets), i think Singapore as a whole would be greatly impacted for the better; but only if those who re
Ocated were to move back after, say ten years. Like China, Singapore is culturally isolationist, no matter how much its government pretends to the world this is not really true. While most Singaporeans know English and speak very good English, the government has truly failed to inculcate a cultural mandate to make Singaporeans as a people, relevant to the world and loved by the world. Instead, we are perceived (yed I have PR now so I think I can say this from experience!) as culturally isolationist and even zenophobic, robotized gold bugs whose only main concern is the love of material wealth and short-term worldly goals. My prayer for Singapore and her great people is that they will not stand any longer for a overnment-controlled, boring country which stifles creativity and innovation through rote learning and a dammnable focus on material success. God help Singapore!
