Review: Sound of Music Musical
Sponsored Review
Recently, when we did a road trip to Malaysia, we realised the best DVD to watch in the car was the all-time favourite, Award winning movie—The Sound of Music. The kids loved the show, the storyline, and of course the catchy songs!
When we realised that The Sound of Music musical was coming to town, it didn’t take long for us to decide that it is a Must-See! And so we did and it was a must-must-must see!!
I’ve not seen the musical before, but have watched the movie countless times when growing up. Thus, I had some reservations at first, as I really loved the movie and it would be a challenge for the musical to meet that expectation! I knew the movie was adapted from the musical, so I wasn’t sure if I was ready to see my all time favourite movie from a different angle.
Well, my fears were unfounded! The two and a half hour production was so beautiful! (No wonder it won many awards as well, and no wonder they made a movie out of it!) The stage sets were lavish and grand, and throughout the musical, I felt I was transported back to the past, watching my favourite movie come to live! It was a wonderful nostalgic feel that night!
It was indescribable watching a live performance of these favourite hits that I’ve been singing since I was a kid! Imagine watching Do-Re-Mi and The Lonely Goatherd live with the kids dancing and jumping around, and listening to a very competent rendition of Climb Every Mountain and The Sound of Music. And my favourite scene was when Captain Von Trapp sang Edelweiss in a most grand German hall setting. Imagine huge swastikas hanging down, stern blond German soldiers at every corner, and perfect lighting in the auditorium. I felt very Austrian then too!
For the kids, it was a blast! There were slight differences in some scenes and song arrangements from the movie. However, it wasn’t even picked up by them, simply because the story was so captivating! They were enthralled by the songs and performance, and kept chatting about the various scenes that was “so funny” or “so cute” or “so grand”.
If you are a big fan of the movie, do watch this musical. Your feet would be tapping along as they sing, you may possibly hum along *silently* for some songs and you would enjoy all the familiar songs come to live. There are some getting used to. For example, The Lonely Goatherd was sung during the thunderstorm, not in a mini family performance. Or the Do-Re-Mi was the first ever song Maria sang to the kids at the Front Foyer of the home when they first meet. Also, we get to hear some songs that were not sung in the movie. Not bad songs, just not so catchy which is not surprising why the movie didn’t feature them.
If you have not watched the movie, then you’ve just go to watch this musical too! Besides the story and song, this production boasts a strong cast. The children were very talented and cute! (Nicole’s word) They sang beautifully with the Captain and Maria. Strangely, the show stealer was the Reverend Mother! Ohh her voice, it was so clear and pristine!
Go watch it and I’m sure you would be singing the songs (at least in your shower) for the rest of the week!
