What type of Diapers to use?

Once you become a parent, you are suddenly thrown into the world of diapers!

From the onset, guys seemed to be quite lost! I once went to the hospital to visit a friend who just gave birth. We bought LARGE diapers (Someone told us, that it was a Big baby for a newborn :) …However before you enter the world of Pampers and Drypers…have you thought about Cloth Diapering?

Yes…Cloth Diapering used to involve safety pins and folding the diapers into a nice “triangle”, so as to efficiently carry the “poo”… but not any more!

Today, there are well-positioned-velcros, pre-folds and water-proof covers, to solve all “leaking” problems!

Why Cloth Diapering?

1) A very Important Singaporean Reason for Cloth Diapering is:

$COST$

Yes…Cloth Diapering is much cheaper…and with each child using about 6 to 8 thousand diapers (From Birth to 3yo). You will be saving a few thousand dollars just by re-using the diapers.

And you can pass them down from No.1 to No.3…Really cost savings! :)

2) Cloth Diapers are healthy and help prevent diaper rash

The Plastic materials that diapers are made of, does not let the baby’s bottom breathe effectively. Cloth diapers also do not contain any toxic chemicals.

Best of all, it is known to prevent diaper rash, and if your babies have sensitive skin, then these are the diapers for you!

3) Cloth Diapers are better for the Environment

The idea of a "disposable" diaper is a myth and the ramifications of the diaper will stay with us for centuries to come. In fact, they are the third largest single product in the waste stream behind newspapers and beverage containers!

Well, if these reasons are good enough for you…You can try out these well designed cloth diapers carried by Tiny Pants

It’s really quite simple, and if your babies have diaper rash, these diapers can really solve all your problems!

Nadine tried the diapers and they were really easy to use! If you are a bit wary about making the switch, you can try using both at the same time.

Most people use disposable diapers for convenience sake. I think that people are concerned about the environment, but often not enought to change their habits.

      That is true.

I think being a parent has its numerous concerns already, and that’s why changing the type of diapers one uses midstream, may not be the highest in terms of priority.

I LOVE cloth diapers! I have two brands: Happy Heinys and Bum Genius. LOVE them. I have 20 total and I wash them every other day. I wish I bought more so I can wash them every 3 days and that the load could be bigger, but I don’t want to buy more now because my children are 3 and 1.5 years old and I’m hoping at the least the oldest will be potty trained soon.

My main reason was reducing garbage in the landfills. I still use disposables for overnight but overall, I’m saving so much garbage and I feel soooo much better about that when I switched to cloth diapers. They’re great!!

provided ya baby don’t poo every hour loh…

    • edunloaded Says:

Wa,,,if poo every hour, also very costly for disposables…and backslide will also be very tender…

I remember when something like that happened before, we had to give time for the baby’s bottom to breathe as well…:)

If people really wanted to switch to cloth diapers, they have to be passionate enough about the benefits to make an effort to switch (since cloth diapers require more work, a major turn-off for parents), otherwise they won’t make the effort to switch, whether it’s for the environment or to save money.

Many people are indeed concerned about their finances, but often convenience outweighs saving money. If everyone did things to save money in their lives, restaurants would go out of business, we’d never buy soap (we’d make our own at home), or buy floor cleaner (again, we’d make our own at home), or we would all be taking the bus to work. I understand why people don’t switch to cloth diapers.

And yes, scraping off the poop is gross, but I am passionate about the purpose of cloth diapers; that’s why I’m willing to live with the extra work and grossness.

The scrapping poo thing is not really something I enjoy…maybe let my DH do that :)

haha. yah loh. very X. I was lamenting that Jade’s using up one pack of 24 diapers in one day.

but I can’t imagine having to wash 24 cloth diapers soiled with poo in a day.

My boy poo-ed up to 11 times a day in the earlier months and we have been using cloth diapers full time (day, night, outings, travels). It keeps his sensitive skin healthy.

We are also a user of “Cloth Diaper” – Bum Genius. It was first introduce to us when Jared is just a month old. I must said that it has indeed help us save quite a fair bit of $ until he goes to infant care. Now, he uses disposable diaper in school but when at home he will use cloth diaper.

One good thing about these cloth diaper is that it is “one size fits all”. They have adjustable button. Jared is still wearing the same cloth diaper when he is 1 month old till now (going to 13mth.
