Beauty and the Beast : A Magical Musical

Sponsored Review

“It’s simply Magical!” exclaimed my 10 year old daughter. Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is in town, and the Hit Broadway Musical is destined to charm audiences of all shapes and sizes. Based on the same Disney cartoon that we watched while growing up, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, brings your favorite songs and Disney characters and scenes to life! 🙂

Adapted from the French Fairy Tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, Beauty and the Beast tells the story of a prince who is transformed into a hideous beast as punishment for his cruel and selfish ways, and an adventurous young woman named Belle whom he imprisons in his castle. In order to become human again, the Beast must earn Belle’s love before it’s too late.

The plot is simply to understand and my youngest 7yo child was laughing at the comic elements provided by Gaston and Lefou. I laughed at the scenes where the girls were drooling over Gaston and his muscles. His comic arrogance added much laughter to the musical.

The kids love the Beast, as although outwardly he looks like a monster, his innocence is shown when he throws a tantrum, and reveals his fears about saying “Sorry”, and even in dancing.

Being a fan of the Disney cartoon, one recalls many scenes in the cartoon which requires lots of animation. For example, in the scene “Be my guest’, there are thousands of champagne bottles, flying napkins and cups. We shall not provide any spoilers here, but the musical does replicates these scenes, as close as possible to the original cartoon production.

Seven new songs were written for the stage musical, with each song adding character and personification to each scene. When Mrs Potts sings the hit song “Beauty and the Beast,”  the signature song brings a fitting climax to the courtship between Belle and the Beast.

Beauty and the Beast ran on Broadway for 5,461 performances between 1994 and 2007 and it  became Broadway’s 9th longest-running production in history. The musical will be running at the Marina Bay Sands from now till May 3.
