I come from the generation that grew on on John Travolta and ONJ. Yes! I mentioned ONJ to a young colleague a few days back, and he was aghast that there was such an acronym. Such was the impact that Olivia Newton John had on the musical, that all young pimpled hormone raging teenagers were in love with this Australian Idol.

When the news broke that Grease was playing at Marina Bay Sands, I told myself that this is a musical that I must watch!  And Boy! I was certainly NOT Disappointed. This musical is sure to bring you down memory lane, as the T Birds and Pink Ladies, will strike your hearts, belting out tunes coated with “Grease Lightning”.

Trivia Facts about Grease

  • The Musical came first in 1972 before the Hit movie in 1978.  Starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, the Hit movie is also the highest grossing movie musical of all time.
  • ONJ was 29 when she played Sandy, and some were concerned that she was too old to be acting as a girl in high school.
  • The Movie accommodated ONJ’s Australian accent, by recasting her character from the play’s original American Sandy Dumbrowski to Sandy Olsson, an Australian who holidays and then moves with her family to the United States.
  • Grease gave Olivia Newton John 3 top 5 Singles.
  • The Song “Hopelessly Devoted to You”, was nominated for the 1979 Academy Awards, and ONJ performed it live at the Awards Ceremony.

Personally, some of the my favourite numbers in the show were “We go together”, which had a really cool “Hand Clap” dance incorporated in the number. “Those magic changes” which had the guys chanting “C, Am, F, G7” was also really memorable.

So, if there is One Show that you can only watch this year, “Grease” should be on Top of your List. The show will run till 18 May.
